CHARACTER NAME: Yugo
CHARACTER SERIES: Wakfu
SPECIES: Eliatrope. He’s a “human” hatched from the same egg as a dragon twin. He has some special powers because of this, and also a pair of headwings.
AGE: 13
CANON POINT: Post Season 2 finale, and before the manga starts-- so, close to his fourteenth birthday.
CLASS/ABILITIES: Yugo will be classed as a MAGE due to his connection with Wakfu (the life force in his world) and fondness for portals. Also because he’s the brother of a dragon and it makes sense since dragons are creatures made of magic. He will be keeping his canon powers, however, so I’m going to explain those below!
You’re going to see the word ‘wakfu’ so much that it stops being a word. I’m sorry.
→ Wakfu manipulation: All Eliatropes can do this to some degree. Yugo can see the life force in things, and he can draw it out of the world around him and use it for his own powers and uses.
→ Portals: Yugo can make glowing blue portals, usually in order to jump short distances. He doesn’t have to see where he’s going (through walls) though it helps. The further he travels, the more energy it takes. Other people can also be dragged through these portals, which is described as a spinning sensation and often makes people sick. (In the context of Warforged, he won’t be able to portal anywhere he hasn’t been or seen before, and he won’t be able to access the blank dimension and shove Qilby in there for time out.)
→ Wakfung: A silly name for his fighting style, which is like a bizarre combination of aikido and portals used to turn an enemy’s momentum against them. Like punching themselves in the face.
→ Laser beams: While trying to summon more than two portals at once, Yugo discovered he can create beams of light and zap things. He can only make one of these at a time unless he’s drawing on a whole lot of energy.
→ Super high speed LIGHT CANNON: Jumping into a bunch of portals really fast makes Yugo impossible to hit. He often uses this to slam into enemies or zip across the battlefield.
→ Flight: Due to the tiny headwings of wakfu beneath his hat, Yugo can fly! But he doesn’t use this more than once because he can always portal places.
→ Sword and shield: After Phaeris touched his head and imparted knowledge, Yugo learned how to channel wakfu so that he would get cool tats as well as some weaponry: a little shield that looks like a portal and a pretty energy sword to go with it. This takes a lot of energy and he probably won’t use it unless absolutely necessary. He hasn’t been shown using this after the Qilby fight.
→ Disney Princess Talent: Yeah this is some bullshit, but he can apparently talk to his pet Tofu (a yellow bird creature) like it’s any other character.
→ Wonder Twin Powers: If Adamai is in the same world, Yugo can sense his existence and if he’s in trouble. He can call out telepathically in times of great duress! He feels a great emptiness when Adamai seems to be gone.
→ Immortality: Like the other firstborn Eliatropes, Yugo’s wakfu returns to his Dofus-- his dragon egg-- when he dies, waiting to be reborn along with Adamai. (This won’t apply in WF for obvious reasons.)
Az, Yugo’s little bird buddy, has no speaking lines but he does have a pretty clear-cut personality and he grows blue magic feathers out of his ass. He will be staying behind because all he does is eat Yugo’s food and make things awful.
HISTORY: At the beginning of the universe-- bear with me, this is important-- there was a goddess and a dragon, and together they created the cosmos-- er, Krosmoz. The goddess represented wakfu, the lovely blue lifeforce of the universe, while the dragon was the incarnation of stasis, which is basically destruction. Of all the planets and people in the universe, the most beloved were created in the gods’ image: Eliatropes and dragons, hatched from the same egg. There were six Eliatropes and six dragons as the firstborn, and they were named the Council of Twelve. They led their peers through wisdom, science, leadership, and magic. Theirs was a beautiful paradise. And when the original twelve died, they would return to the egg, called a Dofus, so they would eventually be reborn with their twin. The others weren’t so lucky.
But that wasn’t good enough for some people. Of the original twelve, Qilby the Eliatrope remembered all of his past lives. This drove him kind of insane. He secretly started a war with an evil race of alien robots so that his people would have a reason to leave. The robots slaughtered quite a bit of the Eliatrope race and razed the home planet, so the Eliatropes got on a spaceship and left. Qilby had also created the Eliacube, an artifact that amplified the Eliatropes’ power a thousandfold and made all that cool space travel shit possible.
More time passed. After hitchhiking through the universe for a while, they longed for a home again and settled on the World of Twelve (or Ten, as it was at that time). They were around long enough to have lots of cool legends and murals and mystery built up around them. But then the Mechasms found them again. Not wanting their people to be wiped out, the remaining adults sacrificed their wakfu to create a dimensional sanctuary for all the Eliatrope kids. At this time, Qilby was also pinpointed as the one responsible for pissing off the Mechasms in the first place. Phaeris fought him and bit off his arm. Then Yugo, the current Eliatrope king, volleyball-served him into a blank dimension so he couldn’t hurt anyone anymore or be reincarnated.
Yugo’s sacrifice may have ended his life, too: canon isn’t too clear on that. What’s known is that the Eliatropes faded into obscurity after the conclusion of that war, leaving behind the legend of the Eliacube and a few old ruins and inventions, like the zaap portals used to get from town to town.
When Yugo and his dragon brother Adamai hatched again, it was about three thousand years after Yugo’s death. An elderly dragon cousin, Grougal, left him in the care of a treasure hunter turned innkeeper named Alibert. Yugo was left with a note, his giant blue hat, and a tiny floating bird called a Tofu. Grougal would raise Adamai himself because leaving a dragon with the Wakfu version of goblins is like tempting fate. Also he would’ve roasted everything as whelps tend to do.
Anyway. Yugo thought he was a pretty normal kid, and he was. He helped his dad with running the inn and he could make some mean food. He soon found his old powers though, mostly by accident. He could create portals! While this was new and kind of exciting, it also meant trouble and adventure. Yugo would have to set out and find his people, his home, his purpose. Along the way he picked up a ginger paladin with a demon sword, a hot blonde archer lady, a really cute girl who could control plants, and his dad’s best friend who is secretly rich and yet the greediest old geezer in existence.
Their adventures took them far and wide, and also caught the attention of a time mage named Nox. Not only did Nox have the Eliacube, but he’d figured out how to work it. He intended to drain the wakfu of the last living dragon (as far as he knew) as well as the Tree of Life so that he might go back in time. The man was crazy but also crazy powerful.
A series of misadventures later, the group separated and took a level in badass. Yugo learned how to control his powers, see Wakfu in all living things, and he learned more about his past. He met and traveled with Adamai to this end. They all reunited on the island where Grougal hid; unfortunately, Nox had found them, and he attacked with a vengeance. He ended up leaving empty-handed, as Grougal’s wakfu returned to his Dofus-- his dragon egg, to be with his brother-- rather than getting sucked into the Eliacube.
Nox was furious, so he turned his eyes to the Tree of Life, which nourished all the Sadida (plant people). The party went to warn them and amass some kind of army. Yugo and Adamai also procured Grougal’s egg and kept it safe. At first, they were doing well despite Nox’s invasion of tiny black gnomes, but he had some crazy plant zombies doing the work for him. He managed to erect a portal that would allow him to bring in his crazy spider-Eliacube machine.
Time was short. While Yugo and Adamai sneaked into the machine to sabotage it from the inside, everyone else had to deal with some giant juggernaught boss robot. One of the party members died horribly and then Nox managed to suck the life out of the… Tree of Life, therefore killing off another character. Yugo was crazy angry and managed to wrestle control of the Eliacube for a moment, even though it burned him badly; Nox beat the shit out of him and gloated as he turned back time… to twenty minutes ago. Needless to say, he’d been waiting two hundred years for this and it was a huge letdown. Yugo screamed and cried at him, yelling because he was a madman, and Nox pretty much just gave up and died before he could suffer any retribution for his crimes.
After that, things were happier for a time. While Eva took off Mulan-style to chase the dead, Yugo and Adamai worked on unlocking the secrets of the Eliacube. This misadventure led to the accidental release of Qilby from his dimensional prison, as well as Grougal’s Dofus hatching. So not only did they have some one-armed Dumbledore-looking guy telling them the origins of the Eliatropes, but they also had a baby Eliatrope and a baby dragon to take care of. Qilby claimed he was the king of the forgotten people, and he relayed the story of the doomed space elves... with some embellishments to make himself look good. He also gave Yugo a fetch quest that would effectively separate the problematic brothers.
It was all part of the plan. While the group was off sailing several seas in search of Qilby’s Dofus, Qilby took the Eliacube for himself. He turned Adamai into demon-bait and took off with the car keys, then brought back the Wakfu equivalent of Sargeras. Qilby’s plan was to drain the world of wakfu so that he could skip planets again, like he always wanted. Of course, everyone was against this. Yugo met Phaeris, one of his dragon cousins and the guardian of the Dofus, who bonded with him in a short time. He imparted some of his old, old knowledge so that Yugo would understand Qilby was a traitor, not a true king. As a bonus, Yugo gained like fifty levels and learned all his class skills. However, Qilby had fused with the Eliacube and easily booted Yugo through portals, teaching him about his past life as the king, the blank dimension, and then taking Yugo to meet the Eliatrope children.
This is where things went from bad to worse. After Qilby bullied the kids and their ancient draconic caretaker for a while, Yugo united all of them and they lasered Qilby’s space juggalo goatee off the side of the planet. The final straw was Shinonome, Qilby’s sister, projecting her consciousness outside of the Dofus and slicing off Qilby’s Eliacube arm. As he reverted and lost all his power, Yugo reluctantly punted him back into the blank dimension.
The Eliacube would stay with the children, and they would be able to watch as Yugo grew up. When he was ready to rule and when there was space on the World of Twelve for like five thousand little kids with huge hats, he would have a kingdom again. But for now, he was to go home and do normal kid things. Much hugs and brotherly sobbing was had.
Yugo will be taken after he goes home with his new brother-things, Chibi and Grougal. Alibert has a lot of dragon kids now, but he seems to be adjusting.
PERSONALITY:
For all standards and purposes, Yugo is a fairly generic fantasy protagonist. He is adopted by a single dad, has special powers that he discovers when he comes of age, and he’s quickly given a quest to find his origins. However, because the world of Wakfu is crazy and hilarious, he ends up doing more than just standard adventuring. He learns a lot about the outside world (more than stories he heard in his father’s inn), about himself and his limits, and how even the most unlikely people can become allies.
What Yugo lacks in age and experience, he makes up for in kindness and courage. He will never run away from someone in need-- a trait that gets them in trouble on several occasions. While it (usually) ends well, they get sidetracked so much that Eva berates him for it. Although he’s more than a little hotheaded, if Yugo has done something wrong or hurt someone by accident, he’s quick to apologize and try to make it right. He basically goes through his journey trying to help people more than being helped himself.
When it comes to needing help, he’s not above asking. He’s aware that he’s just a kid and he often gets in over his head. While some people might not be okay with ditching manly pride and being a cheerleader, Yugo wears the costume like the best of them and will cheer wholeheartedly for his friends’ victory.
Sometimes he can be a bit of a brat, though. In his spare time, he enjoys playing harmless pranks. Like any kid, he’s competitive, and he’s quick to jump into things without thinking them through. There are quite a few moments in the show where he and the paladin leap into the fray, and the girls are left wondering why they even bother dealing with it all. Also, Yugo doesn’t do too much sulking, but he’s not above it entirely.
Yugo is occasionally sarcastic though not in a mean way. All of his friends are sassy to a point, but Yugo is occasionally the straight man in the comedy. When almost everyone else is crazy or entirely detached from reality, he can be found sitting in the corner waiting for it to stop. He seems to be somewhat aware that his life is hilarious and downright nonsensical at times.
Yugo’s temper is hard to place-- short-lived, and he’s quick to forgive. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and he seems to think that no one is truly evil. When he sees his friend’s murderer shed a tear, he stops fighting him immediately, and tells everyone the war is over. He believes that everyone deserves a second chance, too. There are several antagonists Yugo encounters who are decent people beneath all the questionable things they do, which reinforces this way of thinking. Subsequently, he’s never forced to kill anyone, and no one dies outside of two token heroic sacrifices. (They both end up being reborn later on.)
Beneath the layers of sunshine, Yugo thinks very deeply about the implications of being an adventurer, of having responsibility. He worries about his brother when they’re separated, and he’s afraid he’ll go crazy for the Eliacube and turn into someone like Nox. He can empathize with people very well-- perhaps too well, which gets him both friends and unwanted attention. Yugo has very strong bonds with the people around him, refusing to abandon Phaeris when Qilby is trying to kill them both, yet giving out hugs when the situation is appropriate. Also, he won’t get to see his people again until he’s old enough to be king, and just knowing he’s actually going to have to do that is enough to make him a little more serious about things.
When everything is hopeless and he ought to be down for the count, Yugo always finds a way to stand back up. The fight against Qilby is basically an hour of watching Yugo getting blasted through walls, but he gets back up every time-- even if it takes him a minute. Yugo will fight until he’s raw and dead, knowing that lives are on the line and he’s the only one who can. This self-sacrificial tendency may have killed him in previous lives.
Although he is young, Yugo is still an Eliatrope. He’s determined to learn more about his powers and his people, sharing intelligence and a thirst for knowledge with his brethren. He cares deeply about chasing answers even if they take him to dangerous places. He finds a certain childish joy and mastery in his magic that isn’t displayed by anyone else in the series. In his past life, he was both protector and adventurer, traveling far and wide with his brother and mastering everything he could touch. He has a lot to learn about governing a technologically-advanced people and only a few years to do it, but this is a challenge any Eliatrope can transcend, especially one of the Council of Twelve.
Even Eliatropes have things that keep them up at night. Yugo fears losing people, as he takes his friends’ deaths very personally; if he was trapped in the blank dimension like Qilby, he wouldn’t last. He’s intensely afraid of Adamai getting hurt since he can feel it too. Later on, his adopted brothers get kidnapped and he spends a good deal of time alternating between anger and self-blame. He’s also fiercely protective of his adoptive father. It’s safe to say that while knowledge is important to him, his family is, too.
While Yugo might not have developed in an overly obvious way, he is still young and in the process of growing up. He’s seen war, but the world remains bright and full of hope to him. Real war, gruesome and bloody, where atrocities are committed for no real reason? Totally unheard of. As his adventures continue, he will likely grow up into a fun-loving young man who is a little sad when people aren’t looking. But until then, he’ll be a rambunctious thirteen-year-old with portals.
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE:
[Yugo hasn’t quite figured out how people in the orb can see him. Obviously. Because the only things visible are the ears and the top of his blue hat!]
Um, hello? Can anyone hear me? I’ve heard we can use these to talk to people in the sanctums, so that’s what I was gonna do. [A pause.] Am I supposed to be giving a report? Uh…
[He turns around in a slow circle, looking at the forest.]
No sign of demons anywhere lately. It’s a good place to hunt as long as you’re careful about the bow-meows. There’s a village near here, too. It’s full of… what’s the name? Elves? I haven’t gotten too close though. [He scritches beneath his hat.] I don’t think they really like us yet.
I think that’s it for now. I’m gonna see how far I can get and then I’ll find my way back to the sanctum. See you later.
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
E. The Provisionary
None of these berries looked like anything Yugo had seen before. He paused before touching them, glancing at the paper he’d shoved into his pocket. That’s right-- the blue ones with the little purple stripes were safe to pick, but the red ones were poisonous. The roots, however, were valuable for other things.
He wished he had Ruel’s haven-bag right now. He could simply reach out and drop a quail into the bag without even moving! It was great for catching prey, but nothing like that existed on this world. If it did, it wasn’t commonplace enough for Yugo to find one in the sanctum. It looked like he’d have to do this the old-fashioned way.
Fine. He could deal with that. He was always the one who caught rodents in the inn, even before he had powers. He knew how to set a trap that would catch a rabbit. (Not a wabbit. Those were different.)
A few minutes later, Yugo was ready. He set his depressingly-normal satchel full of berries in a high place where no one could reach, and then he set out to find some small game. He was short and pretty good at hide-and-seek because of it. He just had to sit in this clearing and wait…
And wait… and wait…
Yugo had started to nod off when a small flicker of movement in the grass caught his eye. He straightened, peering, not yet springing into action. Sure enough, a mottled brown rabbit poked its head out of the grass and sniffed the air for signs of danger. There were leafy greens and roots at the base of a nearby tree, piled neatly and ready for the taking. The rabbit approached the tree carefully, still watching for signs of predators. One little predator watched, not daring to breathe any more than necessary.
SNAP. The rabbit squealed as it disappeared up into the tree, still thrashing for its life. No amount of wiggling would free it, though. “Yay! It worked!” Yugo jumped through a portal to the top of the tree. He took a moment to untie the net, then caught the rabbit through another portal before it hit the ground. “Sorry, little bunny. You’re dinner tonight.”
He quieted the rabbit’s struggles with a painless flick of his wrist. Not bothering to stalk through the underbrush anymore, he flipped from portal to portal without a care. He picked up the satchel of berries on the way, and then continued, enjoying having at least some degree of aptitude with his powers again. A couple weeks ago, he hadn’t even been able to form a single one.
It was a good sign, and it meant he was recovering as well as adjusting to this weird new world. He was ready, now: maybe not ready for the kind of war they wanted, but ready to help nonetheless.
